On-Campus Student Employment

All students must have a valid Social Security Number (SSN) issued by the United States Social Security Administration BEFORE starting work on campus.

First, confirm you are a work-study student. You should have received a letter from the Financial Aid Office informing you of your award. If not, contact the Financial Aid office to verify. Next, follow the steps below.

  1. Search & Apply on Handshake: Get active on , our online platform for on-campus job postings, for on-campus jobs and follow the directions for applying for any positions of interest. Be sure to view this site regularly since jobs are posted frequently.
  2. Search & Apply in person: Since some 91¾«Æ· offices do not post on Handshake, visit the different offices on campus that interest you and ask them directly if they are hiring. If they are, apply!
  3. Get Creative: Explore employment options in the surrounding 91¾«Æ· area. Some employers in our local community hire work-study students! Consider positions at both the New Britain and the Newington Parks & Rec (After School Programs), Wethersfield Historical Society, Hartford Boys and Girls Club, Stop & Shop, Dollar General, Target, Costco, Trader Joe’s, Olive Garden, West Farms Mall, Big Y, Jersey Mike’s. (91¾«Æ·â€™s Card Office provides students free access to the U-Pass program for statewide public transportation.)
  4. Prepare & Interview: Securing any employment involves preparing. You need to submit a resume and interview for the position. If you need assistance in polishing your application or sharpening your interview skills, with a staff member in the Career Development Office.

  1. 1. Search & Apply for jobs on or Interstride, a career preparation platform that supports international students and alumni in job searching and networking. 

    (Note: 91¾«Æ·â€™s ISSS office is the primary resource for international students to receive resources and advice about OPT/CPT and other sponsorship-related questions. Handshake and Interstride are to be utilized in conjunction with ISSS and the Office of Career Development.)
  2. Search & Apply in person: Since some 91¾«Æ· offices do not post on Handshake, visit the different offices on campus that interest you and ask them directly if they are hiring any non-work study positions. If they are, apply!
  3. Prepare & Interview: Securing any employment involves preparing. You need to submit a resume and interview for the position. If you need assistance in polishing your application or sharpening your interview skills, with a staff member in the Career Development Office.
  4. Get a letter: Obtain a hire letter from the on-campus hiring department supervisor or manager.
  5. Secure a social security card: Apply for a social security card online at: . Once you complete your application (online or in person), your card should be received within 7-10 business days and mailed to the address you provided on your application.

Graduate Assistantships & Internships

All Graduate Assistantship and Internship positions are listed on and all applicants are encouraged to search and apply directly through the Handshake posting. For more information on GA and GI opportunities, see the Graduate Studies website here.

Follow the instructions in the Handshake posting and send all required application documentation to the respective departmental personnel for review.

  • for full-time and part-time matriculated students
  • limited to 20 hrs/wk

  • for part-time status students
  • limited to 35 hrs/wk

All applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered:

  • Matriculated in a graduate program
  • Maintaining a GPA of 3.00 or higher
  • Registered in the current semester
    • Full-time at least nine credits (Graduate Assistantship)
    • Part-time up to 8.99 credits (Graduate Internship)

  • Part-time Graduate Assistants must complete 10 hrs/wk or 150 hrs/semester
  • Full-time Graduate Assistants must complete 20 hrs/wk or 300 hrs/semester
  • Full-time Graduate Interns must complete 35+ hrs/wk, total semester hour requirement varies
  • Graduate Assistant assignments begin the first week of each semester and continue through the end of the semester
  • Graduate Interns can work and take classes year-round

  • May not be employed in any other employment category of the university
  • Should not engage in full-time work outside of the university
